Tax Relief in Wake of Corona Virus Pandemic

The IRS has extended the April 15, 2020, 2019 tax return filing deadline in the wake of the Corona Virus pandemic. The deadline is now July 15, 2020. See https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/tax-day-now-july-15-treasury-irs-extend-filing-deadline-and-federal-tax-payments-regardless-of-amount-owed

Generally, taxpayers can request an extension of time to file their income tax returns, but this only extends the filing deadline, not the payment deadline. However, under the relief provision described herein above, the deadline to pay tax is also extended.

In addition, this extension also applies to estimated tax payments. See Notice 2020-17.

Please note that the IRS is the agency in charge of assessing and collecting federal taxes, not state taxes, so these provisions do not automatically apply to states.

However, for taxpayers in California, the State has issued similar relief provisions. You can find Governor Newsom’s Executive Order here.

Mendes Weed, LLP is still here for its clients during the California Shelter in Place Order. Although we are meeting with clients over the telephone or in a Zoom Conference, we are here to help you.
